Survey of Sambhal temple, reopened after 46 years, conducted discreetly today
A four-member team of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertook a survey of five shrines on Friday (December 20, 2024). These include the recently reopened temple and 19 wells in Sambhal. “The four-member team surveyed five shrines and 19 wells. The new temple that was found was also monitored. The ancient temple that was recently opened was also surveyed. A total of around 24 areas were surveyed,” said Sambhal DM Rajender Pensiya.
This comes after the Sambhal district administration wrote to the ASI asking for carbon dating of the Bhasma Shankar temple and a well there, days after the temple was reopened. The shrine has been locked since 1978, following communal riots in the town. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vandana Mishra visited the temple and ordered the installation of CCTV cameras. A live feed will be available with the Kotwali police station.
