Trinamool announces Alifa Ahmed as candidate for bypoll

The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday (May 27, 2025) announced Alifa Ahmed, 38, as its candidate for the upcoming bypoll at Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district. She is the daughter of the deceased former MLA of Kaliganj, Nasiruddin Ahmed.

Kaliganj is among five Assembly constituencies across the country where bypolls are scheduled for June 19. The counting of votes will take place on June 23, according to the Election Commission of India (EC).

The bypoll at Kaliganj was necessitated by Ahmed’s passing on February 2 this year.

Popularly known as Laal, Ahmed was a lawyer and a two-time MLA from Kaliganj. He had secured the seat in the Assembly election in 2011 and then again in 2021.
